PewDiePie, the popular YouTuber with over 100 million subscribers, announced his departure from DLive and signed an exclusive live-streaming agreement with YouTube.

Global renowned YouTuber PewDiePie, with over a hundred million subscribers, announced his departure from DLive and a return to YouTube. The company stated on Monday that PewDiePie has signed an exclusive live streaming agreement with YouTube, agreeing to only stream video content on the platform.

DLive and PewDiePie

DLive was launched in September 2018 and is currently the largest live streaming platform in the blockchain space with a large user base. The platform migrated to the Tron blockchain in December last year and merged with Tron's small live streaming platform BitTorrent Live (BLive). According to Dapp.com, DLive has approximately 5 million monthly users and over 80,000 active streamers. PewDiePie started streaming on the DLive platform as early as April 2019 and signed an exclusive live streaming agreement with DLive in January 2020, bringing millions of his fans to this startup company.

At that time, Tron founder Justin Sun also promoted this news on Twitter and released a video of PewDiePie explaining why he left YouTube and chose DLive. PewDiePie pointed out:

"BitTorrent is powered by Tron (TRX), the world's largest decentralized peer-to-peer file-sharing network with over 100 million users. It's a great time to join DLive now. DLive's mission is to not take any income away from creators. They always strongly support creators, and I'm excited to see it continue to grow. DLive also rewards fans for interacting with creators, something that other platforms don't do."

Reconciliation with YouTube

It is speculated that the initial contract DLive signed with PewDiePie must have offered very favorable conditions to make PewDiePie willing to switch from YouTube to DLive for live streaming. Now that the contract has expired, it may be due to disagreement on renewal terms, or it could be that PewDiePie's number of subscribers on DLive (822,000 subscribers) did not meet expectations. PewDiePie ultimately chose to return to YouTube and signed an exclusive live streaming agreement with them. PewDiePie stated:

"YouTube has been my home for over a decade. As I continue to explore new ways to create content and interact with fans worldwide, live streaming on that platform is a natural choice. I will focus on live streaming in 2020 and beyond, so being able to collaborate with YouTube and be at the forefront of new product features is especially exciting for the future."
