Emphasizing Security and Decentralization, Vitalik Announces Focus on "Stage 1+" L2 Starting Next Year
"Starting next year, I plan to publicly mention only Layer 2 solutions that have reached 'Stage 1' in my blog posts or speeches. I am serious about this," Vitalik Buterin wrote on Twitter. However, he added that there will be exceptions for projects that are particularly interesting or innovative.
He stated that personal investments or friendships will not influence whether he mentions certain Layer 2 solutions, "Whether I have invested or you are my friend; stage 1 or failure."
The Stage 1 standard that Vitalik Buterin has been referring to includes:
- A complete and functioning verification system has been deployed.
- There are at least 5 external participants who can submit fraud proofs.
- Users can exit without relying on permissioned operators.
- In the event of improper upgrades by more centralized security council participants, users have at least 7 days to exit.
- The security council is correctly set up: The security council must achieve 75% consensus to overturn the proof system, and no fewer than 26% of council members must be independent of the rollup itself, emphasizing security and decentralization.
Vitalik Buterin stated that Stage 1 is a very reasonable milestone and a necessary advancement for the security of Layer 2 networks. He also mentioned that multiple zk rollup teams have told him they will achieve the Stage 1 goal by the end of the year, highlighting the importance of transitioning from "beautified multisig" to trust frameworks.
Vitalik: Only OP and ARB Have Reached Stage 1, Reveals L2 Can Potentially Steal User Assets
While public opinion teases that Vitalik Buterin only cares about technology and love, the market is likely more concerned about coin prices. Some comments below the post requested Vitalik Buterin to stop selling Ethereum, to which he responded that yesterday's sale triggered an automatic order from August 29.
Regarding Stage 1, Vitalik Buterin emphasized this standard at the end of last month. On August 30, Mert, CEO of Helius Labs, stated on Twitter that every major Layer 2 solution can currently technically steal user funds. Vitalik Buterin emphasized that reaching Stage 1 can prevent this issue, and at that time, only Optimism and Arbitrum had met this standard.
