Bridgewater Associates Founder Warns of Civil War in the U.S., Ray Dalio: The Most Important Battle of My Life

Recently, Ray Dalio, the founder of the world's largest hedge fund Bridgewater Associates, revealed his views on the U.S. presidential election in an interview. He bluntly stated that neither of the candidates in this election is what the United States needs. He also warned that the polarization and extremism in opinions observed in this election could be a signal of the United States on the eve of a civil war, although such conflicts will not be as bloody.

A Brewing New Type of Civil War? People No Longer Accepting Differences in Opinion

"In terms of elections, this will be the most important election of my life because there is now an irreconcilable difference between the two sides," said Ray Dalio on the show. His remarks reveal concerns about extreme polarization of societal opinions. In fact, he warned in May this year that the possibility of the U.S. plunging into a civil war is at 35-40%. This form of civil war involves "people moving to states more in line with their values and ignoring federal regulations they don't trust," with the possibility of violent conflict, indicating a decreased level of acceptance between people of different beliefs.

Reflecting on January 6th, 2021, when a group of Trump supporters violently attacked the U.S. Capitol after Trump refused to accept Biden's victory in the 2020 election while lawmakers were in session confirming the election results. He believes it is worth observing post-election whether the election results will ultimately be accepted by society and if there will be an orderly transition of power.

Neither Harris nor Trump, Ray Dalio: America Needs a Strong Moderate Leader

Speaking of the two presidential candidates, he bluntly stated that neither the Republican nor Democratic candidates are what the country needs. "America needs a strong moderate leader to distance themselves from extremists," said Ray Dalio.

"One extreme will war against another."

The Republican and Democratic parties present extreme views on issues such as abortion rights, immigration, and climate change. However, according to surveys, the most concerning issues for voters include economic matters like inflation. In the highly connected world of 2024, many people only pay attention to the candidates' personal characteristics or specific statements, but more importantly, these factors largely represent an ideology, whether moderate or hardline, left or right, rather than just the individual. The author adds: this phenomenon is more pronounced in the cryptocurrency community, where people care more about whether the statements of political figures have speculative opportunities.

However, he also admitted that moderate leaders in the public eye seem to be missing, and it is now clear that Trump is a staunch conservative, while Harris may be a more moderate liberal. Interestingly, Ray Dalio joked before that Taylor Swift and the business opportunities she drives could help unify American society. However, this creative singer only declared her support for Harris this month, also getting embroiled in partisan disputes.
