Strict Conditions! STEPN Introduces New Consumption Mechanism: HP, 5% of Q2 Revenue will be Used for Buyback

Stepn, the play-to-earn blockchain game, announced on July 12th that its second-quarter profit reached $122.5 million, with 5% of it allocated for the buyback and burn program of its token GMT. Stepn also introduced a new token consumption mechanism on the 13th: Health Points (HP). Overall, Stepn's approach to sustainable play-to-earn operations involves a more diverse consumption mechanism, providing buyback incentives, and encouraging users to evolve towards high-quality sports shoes.

Furthermore, on July 15th, Stepn will begin implementing a policy to remove Chinese users from the platform.

New Consumption Mechanism: HP

STEPN states that HP is similar to durability. They use a dual-decay mechanism to make the game more sustainable. The HP bar will be displayed as a capsule icon in the background of the sneaker.

HP will decay as you move, and factors such as "consumption energy amount," "quality of sneakers," and "comfort level" will affect the decay rate. To restore HP, you will need "comfort gems," GST, and GMT.

Impact of HP Level

  • Each pair of sneakers starts with full HP. Once HP drops below 20%, the energy points provided by the sneakers cannot be calculated. If HP reaches 0%, the sneakers cannot be used for earning. Additionally, when HP is not full, sneakers cannot be sold or transferred.
  • High-quality sneakers have very high HP and may take years to recover, but the recovery cost is also high.
  • After being forged, sneakers' HP will not deplete for the first 48 hours.

Other Updates: Stricter Conditions

  • Sneaker Enhancement, a feature that allows the fusion of five sneakers to obtain a higher-quality pair, now requires sneakers that have been forged at least three times to be eligible for fusion.
  • Mystery Box will offer better rewards, but the cost of opening the box may change.

Realm 3: Ethereum Version

STEPN mentions that adjustments may be made to the initial values of the Ethereum version. The cooldown time for forging is 48 hours, with a cost of 90 GST + 10 GMT. For high-quality sneakers, the cost may be higher, and there may be changes to the cost in the future.

Another Path: Axie Infinity

Compared to STEPN's more sophisticated consumption mechanism for sustainability, another early P2E case, Axie Infinity, is transitioning towards Play and Earn. Sky Mavis, the creator of Axie Infinity, acknowledges the issue of economic imbalance. The new version, Origin, allows Axie Infinity to evolve into a model that does not rely on player growth.

Philip La, the product lead, believes that many high-quality players are ready to invest in the game, climb the rankings, or showcase themselves through in-game customization. They aim to create valuable in-game experiences that encourage players to "consume."

The balance between "spending for higher profits" and "spending for a better gaming experience" may be the equilibrium point that Web3 games are seeking between playing and earning.
