According to a plan announced by Twitter co-founder and CEO of payment company Jack Dorsey on his Twitter announcement, Twitter will support an independent team consisting of up to five open-source architects, engineers, and designers to develop an open and decentralized new standard architecture for social media. He stated:

The goal is for Twitter to ultimately be a client of this standard.

This new independent team at Twitter will focus on developing open standards for decentralized processes across social platforms, rather than the centralized structures of existing media. Although Dorsey did not directly link it to blockchain, he hinted that the fundamental principles of blockchain technology might provide tools for developing and persistently hosting, governing, and even monetizing.

Twitter's Head of Legal and Policy, Vijaya Gadde, also tweeted stating that the Blue Sky initiative is part of the company's broader efforts to support and promote the values of a free and open internet.

Blue Sky Initiative

As outlined by Jack Dorsey, he first believes that centralized community management is more effective in regulation, especially in this era of misinformation. However, he also pointed out that community controls algorithms, leading us as viewers in the direction they want us to see rather than a more neutral content. Lastly, due to the mechanisms of algorithms, the community is increasingly filled with controversial topics and more content trying to attract their attention.

He views Twitter as an open community from the early days, with the potential to become a decentralized internet standard like the SMTP email protocol. Therefore, Twitter is assembling this Blue Sky team to create a truly free community media.

Kaliya Young, co-founder of Internet Identity Workshop and startup HumanFirst.Tech, stated:

The Blue Sky independent team should help experts who have been working in this area for many years, rather than starting from scratch.

Kaliya Young further mentioned that various organizations have been dedicated to open standards for social media for a decade, with decentralized social media standards being considered the next generation by open privacy non-profit founder Sarah Jamie Lewis, showing great optimism for its development.

As an example of decentralized social media, there is a significant amount of open-source work on decentralized signals, which essentially belongs to users' social data that can be used on the internet without being tied to platforms like Facebook.

The Blue Sky project has also received praise from Daniel Buchner, the lead for Microsoft's decentralized identity system, who expressed interest in collaborating. While Dorsey is not the first prominent figure in the industry to support decentralized social networks, the Twitter audience generally sees this as a positive step.

Neha Narula, Director of the Digital Currency Initiative at MIT, also responded to Dorsey's announcement on Twitter, releasing a 100-page report on the barriers to building decentralized networks.
