Ethereum Foundation Renames ETH 2.0 to "Consensus Layer"

The Ethereum Foundation has announced that to avoid confusion or misunderstanding, and to make it more intuitive, the term "Ethereum 2.0" will be phased out and renamed to "Consensus Layer," eliminating names like ETH1, ETH2, ETH 2.0, etc.

According to the official announcement by the Ethereum Foundation, the Execution Layer (ETH1) and Consensus Layer (ETH2) will be renamed, emphasizing that the decentralized way to continue expanding Ethereum's roadmap will not change. Users do not need to make any changes. The details are as follows:

  • ETH1 → Execution Layer
  • ETH2 → Consensus Layer
  • Execution Layer + Consensus Layer = Ethereum

Why Abandon ETH 2.0?

Psychological Model

The main issue with ETH 2.0 is that for new users, the concept is quite fragmented. They intuitively believe that ETH1 and ETH2 will be launched successively, and once ETH2 is rolled out, ETH1 will disappear, but this is not the case.

By renaming, confusion for future new users can be avoided.

Inclusivity

As the Ethereum roadmap continues to expand, the term Ethereum 2.0 does not accurately convey its mechanism. A new name can help a broader range of users understand Ethereum.

Prevention of Fraud

Some individuals attempt to deceive users by using the name ETH2, enticing investors to exchange for fake ETH2 tokens or scamming investors of their Ether by claiming that "migration is necessary before the ETH2 upgrade." The Foundation hopes that the new name will completely eliminate such fraudulent schemes.

Confusion with Staking Mechanism

Some staking service providers use ETH2 as a staking code, but users do not receive ETH2 tokens, and in reality, there are no actual ETH2 tokens, further creating confusion.

Official Statement

The Ethereum Foundation emphasizes that the merge and shard technologies planned on the Ethereum roadmap will still be implemented on schedule.

The Foundation also concluded in its announcement:

Before the Foundation's rebranding, many in the community were reluctant to let go of the term ETH2. We hope that our proactive rebranding will help the community move away from the outdated term ETH2. The community no longer mentioning the term ETH2 also contributes to the consistency and clarity of the Ethereum ecosystem, making Ethereum more accessible.
