Meta launches end-to-end encrypted messaging service in an attempt to regain community trust

Meta announced on its official website that it is testing a new security storage feature that allows users to back up their end-to-end encrypted chat records on Messenger. The company will continue to update and test this feature, aiming to provide users with the best experience on Messenger and Instagram.

Previously, Facebook, which has seen a significant decline in users due to the Cambridge Analytica data scandal and algorithm concerns, has rebranded as Meta and is now venturing into the metaverse. Recently, the company is making efforts to add encryption features on Messenger in an attempt to regain the community's trust. Meta also reiterated:

Meta cannot access user messages unless you voluntarily provide them.

Secure Storage New Feature: End-to-End Encrypted Backup on Messenger

Messenger will provide end-to-end encryption service to users, storing encrypted messages on existing devices. It utilizes secure storage functionality to prevent device or message loss. Users can access previous chat backups through self-set PIN codes or directly generated passwords, both of which are known only to the users themselves and saved by them. If concerned about forgetting the password, users can also choose to use a third-party cloud system, such as iCloud, to store the password, but this action is not protected by Messenger's end-to-end encryption.

Meta Plans to Launch More Tests and Updates

Expanded Features and Interface: Meta will integrate Messenger and other devices, allowing users to experience the same functions across them. For example, deleted messages will sync on other devices, and features like message unsending and replying to status messages are also under continuous testing. Meta's smart glasses, Ray-Ban Stories, launched in collaboration with eyewear brand Ray-Ban last year, will also support end-to-end encrypted chats. For instance, if chat records with Person A are encrypted, the chat records via Ray-Ban Stories will also be synced and encrypted.

Code Verification: Code Verification is an open-source web browser extension that can be used on Chrome, FireFox, and Microsoft Edge. Users will automatically verify the authenticity of the code when using it.

Deleting Disappearing Mode on Messenger:

Currently on Messenger, there are two functions: Vanish mode, where messages disappear after being viewed, and Disappearing messages, which automatically delete messages. This mode allows individuals to select a time for messages to disappear after a certain period. Meta plans to remove the disappearing mode in the future, but the automatic message deletion will support end-to-end encryption. The disappearing mode still exists on Instagram and does not support end-to-end encryption.

Last year, Meta tested selective end-to-end encrypted messaging and calls on some Instagram users, and in February of this year, expanded to adult users in Ukraine and Russia. Meta will continue to expand and update its service progress.

Recently, Meta raised $10 billion through bond issuance, which will be used to strengthen its balance sheet and provide funding support for its metaverse virtual reality projects.
