Bluesky officially opens registration, unique verification mechanism allows users to customize their social experience

After nearly a year of an invite-only system, Bluesky, a decentralized social networking platform funded by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, announced yesterday that it is opening registration to all users. It aims to empower users by utilizing a unique content moderation mechanism that puts information input back in their hands.

Bluesky Officially Opens Registration for Use

Since the trial version of Bluesky was introduced in March of last year, the product has been tested in the market through an invitation-only trial method. Finally, the official version v1.67 was officially launched yesterday, opening registration for all users to use the officially released product.

The decentralized Twitter project Bluesky's test version App goes online, foreign media review: a rudimentary version of Twitter.

The team stated that unlike the rudimentary version of Twitter that was criticized when it was first launched, over the past year, they have added features such as customizable content moderation tools, custom feeds, and more.

Customizable Feeds

Users can choose accounts to follow based on their preferences and needs, with most content coming from these followed sources. Additionally, users can create their own feeds to output content. For users, the ability to customize feeds allows them to take back control of their attention. For developers, the open feeds market provides an environment for experimenting with algorithms.

Stackable Moderation Services

Security is the foundation of social media. In addition to Bluesky's official review mechanism and collaboration with third-party filtering services, Bluesky allows users to stack multiple moderation criteria together as a customized content filtering tool, different from past algorithms that unilaterally push information that users cannot reject.

Below is how Bluesky designs an open, stackable tag system for moderation:

  • Anyone can define "tags" for any content or specific accounts, such as spam, entertainment, technology, etc.
  • Tags can be generated automatically or manually, with the former generated by third-party services or custom algorithms, and the latter tagged by administrators or users themselves.
  • Any service or individual on the internet can choose how to use these tags to determine the ultimate user experience.

Through this mechanism, organizations and individuals will be allowed to run their own moderation services, which can consider industry-specific knowledge, specific cultural norms, and other preferences. Users can easily overlay additional moderation layers as they would follow new accounts.

Bluesky users customize their experience with tags

When users manually select tags, they can also refer to publicly available tag sets from others to quickly apply them, speeding up the tagging process.

The full tag functionality is expected to be released in the next few weeks.

Open Community Network

The team stated that the Bluesky interface looks familiar to traditional social software to keep the user experience simple. However, the mechanism behind it is completely different, with users having full control over all their experiences.

Bluesky interface resembles Twitter

Customizing feeds, timelines, or content filters is easy on Bluesky. This allows users to better control their information consumption experience.

However, if Bluesky wants to challenge existing competitors, including Mastodon with 1.8 million monthly active users, or even Threads with 130 million monthly active users, besides product specifications, Bluesky still has many challenges to face.
