The European Union has escalated sanctions against Russia, including proposing to ban transactions with the Russian central bank and freeze its assets, closing its airspace to Russian aircraft, and banning Russian state media from broadcasting in the EU. The EU has also imposed sanctions on Belarus for assisting Russia's invasion.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the latest round of sanctions, stating that the EU is providing unprecedented funding for Ukraine's armed forces.

Von der Leyen stated that the airspace ban will prohibit "every Russian aircraft, including private jets of the ruling elite, from entering or crossing the EU."

According to EU documents, the EU "prohibits all aircraft operated by Russian air carriers or registered in Russia, or not registered in Russia but owned, leased, or otherwise controlled by Russian individuals, entities, organizations, or institutions from landing, taking off, or overflying EU airspace."

Russian airlines have also responded to the EU sanctions by announcing that they will "suspend flights on European routes starting from February 28" due to airspace restrictions imposed by European governments.
