Vitalik's post praises ENS, which surged by 90%, hinting at the underlying public chain political maneuvering.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin emphasized the importance of ENS in a tweet and called for major Layer 2 public chains to support it. However, researcher Haotian believes that Vitalik's call is not baseless hype, but rather to maintain the legitimacy of Ethereum's mainnet in the Data Availability Layer.

Vitalik Buterin Tweet Leads to 90% Surge in ENS
Vitalik tweeted on January 3, urging all L2s to support CCIP Resolvers so that users can directly register, update, and read ENS domain names on L2, emphasizing the importance of ENS and the need for affordable costs for users.
CCIP Resolvers, developed jointly by the ENS Foundation and multiple L2 projects, can resolve ENS domain names to corresponding blockchain addresses, allowing L2 blockchains to directly handle the registration and updates of ENS domain names.
Vitalik's call caused the price of ENS to surge by 90%, rising from $8 to $16, and it remained at $15 at the time of writing.
All L2s should be working on (trustless, merkle-proof-based) CCIP resolvers, so that we can have ENS subdomains registerable, updateable and readable directly on L2s.
ENS is super-important, it needs to be affordable!https://t.co/Ice1lTttFE

Independent Researcher Haotian: What Was Vitalik's Real Intent Behind the Post?
Haotian pointed out that many thought Vitalik was pumping ENS, but he believes Vitalik aimed to further reduce Ethereum's control over L2's DA Data Availability.
Pain Points Addressed by ENS
He mentioned that users only need a short domain name to automatically connect to the corresponding long address associated with ENS smart contracts, solving the pain point of complex and hard-to-recognize EOA addresses.
ENS should target markets with larger user traffic, especially L2, as L2 is the future of Ethereum's expansion and absorption of high traffic.
However, if ENS cannot provide services on L2 and remains only on the Ethereum mainnet, it will be challenging to unlock its full potential.
How Does ENS Cover L2 Applications?
In response to this, ENS has developed a solution where users can also use ENS domain names on L2:
ENS has designed an interoperable "layer bridge" that allows various L2s to retrieve and efficiently verify Ethereum mainnet domain data from off-chain environments. Through this bridging mechanism, the resolution function of domain data between various L2s and the mainnet is established, enabling secure use of ENS short domain names on L2.
The document mentions EIP3668, which ensures that domain names used on L2 chains can be correctly verified by mainnet smart contracts; while EIP5599 relaxes the previous requirement that domain name resolution must interact with ENS smart contracts, allowing the resolution task to be delegated to external systems for processing Rollup contracts, significantly enhancing the parallel processing capability of domain name resolution.
Haotian stated:
It is evident that for users to use ENS domain names on L2 normally, they need to call and verify global data on the Ethereum mainnet. This means that to enjoy ENS services, one must adopt legitimate Ethereum Data Availability capabilities, and L2s that take shortcuts based on OP Stack and place DA on third-party DA platforms like Celestia will not be compatible with ENS.

Vitalik Working to Maintain Ethereum Mainnet's DA Legitimacy
Haotian stated that after the London upgrade, L2 will definitely see a big explosion, with various L2s springing up like mushrooms after the rain. Modular blockchains, various stack component services, are breaking the boundaries of the mainnet providing DA+L2 extensions.
Faced with the uncontrolled territory of L2, Vitalik will do everything possible to maintain the legitimacy of Ethereum mainnet's DA. His previous call for Plasma+ZK narratives was a defense of DA legitimacy, and his high-profile push for ENS's L2 domain name data solution serves the same purpose.
Only when DA data is on the Ethereum mainnet can Ethereum validators control the "security" lifeline of L2 assets. If validators lose control over verification, Ethereum becomes a "bulletin board" for L2 releases, and the reliance of L2 chains on Ethereum will decrease, making it uncertain whether these L2s will still want to be Ethereum's L2s.
Upon closer examination, the political colors in the Crypto world have always been strong. Haotian said.
Vitalik regards ENS as the most successful non-financial application on Ethereum, which indeed provides a user-friendly experience. Vitalik's call for ENS to establish a set of interoperable standards for L2 platforms and consolidate DA control, Haotian believes, is truly a strategic move!
Why?接下来,我来简单分析下:— Haotian | CryptoInsight (@tmel0211) January 4, 2024
