The British Museum Has Issued NFTs Multiple Times
As the world's first national public museum founded in 1753, the British Museum has always embraced innovation. According to a report by Decrypt, the British Museum has previously collaborated with LaCollection to release NFT collectibles. In September 2021, they auctioned off 200 digital postcards of works by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai, including his woodblock print "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" created in 1831.
Subsequently, in spring 2022, they auctioned off NFT versions of 20 works by British artist Joseph Mallord William Turner, including the dramatic watercolor painting "Storm (Shipwreck)" from 1823. These paintings were part of a collection donated to the museum by former Christie's chairman Robert Wylie Lloyd, with his bequest stipulating that the works could only be exhibited for two weeks each year or by special request without lending them out. The creation of NFTs allows more people to have the opportunity to appreciate these works.
The most recent NFT auction featured artworks by Italian artist Giambattista Piranesi, including 20 pen and chalk drawings from the British Museum's collection.
