Even Beeple is endorsing it, what is "For the Culture" that the NFT crypto community is rallying behind?

"For the Culture" is a recent trend in the NFT community on Twitter, where many users changed their profile pictures to the Pepe the Frog NFT project Open Edition, encouraging a well-known Key Opinion Leader (KOL) to switch their long-standing profile picture of a mutant ape to Open. The community's efforts were successful, and the founder of Open even launched a special edition Open project for this KOL.

  • Community-championed, changed profile picture to Opepen, KOL "ThreadGuy"

The protagonist of "For the Culture," Opepen Edition, is an NFT project created by digital artist Jack Butcher.

Jack Butcher is passionate about NFTs and has previously launched educational platform Visualize Value VV and NFT project VV Checks.

Earlier this year, following Elon Musk's takeover of Twitter and the introduction of paid blue check verification services, a wave of NFT creations centered around "Check Art" in the crypto space emerged. Jack Butcher took this opportunity to launch the NFT project "Checks - VV Edition," advocating for a shift from centralized institutions providing verification mechanisms for a fee to utilizing smart contracts and cryptocurrencies for digital verification.

In his earlier works, he also expressed his views on NFTs, likening them to verified JPG files, products of Web3 iteration post-Web2 technologies.

Pepewa Project Open Edition Prices Return to Highs

The protagonist of "For the Culture," Opepen Edition, is an NFT project launched by Jack Butcher on January 9, just six days after the release of "Checks - VV Edition." It features a simple graphic composition in classic Web3 meme style of Pepe the Frog.

Opepen has a total of 16,000 editions and is freely minted, but its price has been steadily rising in the secondary market. Following the announcement of the second season airdrop by Blur, NFT projects generally reached their peak in mid-February, with Opepen floor price hitting 0.88 ETH.

However, Opepen prices have since eased, dropping to 0.169 ETH in May, but have now risen again to 0.82 ETH, thanks to the enthusiasm of the crypto community spearheading the For the Culture movement.

Origin of For the Culture: Titans Exchange NFTs for Real

NFT player BORED is the largest holder of Opepen. On July 12, he proposed a trade to well-known NFT KOL ThreadGuy.

BORED wanted to exchange his Opepen #001 for ThreadGuy's Mutant Ape, but ThreadGuy had to hold the Opepen for at least three months, while BORED would hold the Mutant Ape for over a year.

ThreadGuy Unmoved by High Offers

The situation escalated, and two days later, based on Trust Wallet's lottery project Trust Way, they offered ThreadGuy 42.69 ETH, a classic meme number, to acquire his Mutant Ape, stating, "For the Culture."

However, ThreadGuy still maintained that the Mutant Ape was not for sale, believing that the growing interest from onlookers was merely to see him lose the Mutant Ape, emphasizing that he would not trust anyone.

ThreadGuy's Stance Begins to Waver

Just hours after ThreadGuy declared the Mutant Ape as not for sale, he released his own Opepen created in the style of his Mutant Ape.

Subsequently, Jack Butcher, the founder of Opepen, posted his own Opepen creation inspired by the Mutant Ape in the comments of that tweet.

This greatly impressed ThreadGuy, exclaiming "Holy shit," and propelled For the Culture to the next stage: the community began rallying for ThreadGuy to change his Twitter profile picture.

As more Twitter users changed their avatars to ThreadGuy Opepen, on July 16, ThreadGuy finally changed his profile picture to ThreadGuy Opepen and hosted a Twitter Space to discuss the matter with the community.

Additionally, on the ZORA NETWORK second-layer scaling solution, Jack Butcher launched a special project for ThreadGuy "ThreadGuy Opepen", with all proceeds donated to ThreadGuy as a token of gratitude for his significant contributions to the NFT space.

Beeple Supports "For the Culture"

Renowned digital artist Beeple voiced support for the For the Culture movement on July 17, and founder Jack Butcher once again posted an Opepen image inspired by Beeple's style in the comments.

Will encouraging Beeple to change his profile picture be the next stage of "For the Culture," given that Beeple's Twitter avatar has remained unchanged for a long time?
