Google Play Store updates policy, allows apps to integrate digital currencies and NFTs, to be fully implemented by the end of the year

Google announced in its latest update that it will be modifying the Google Play Store policies. In a stark contrast to Apple, developers will now be able to integrate digital currencies and NFTs into their apps and games. The changes are expected to be fully implemented by the end of the year.

Google Play Store to Enable NFT Integration in Apps by End of Year

In March of this year, Google announced on the Android Developers Blog that although there are already many blockchain-related apps hosted on Google Play, there is an increasing number of developers who wish to integrate Web3 elements, including digital currencies and NFTs, into their apps and games.

Google emphasized the importance of collaborating with developers as a key factor in platform development. Now, Google has officially updated its Google Play Store policies to allow developers to integrate digital currencies and NFTs into their apps and games, with full implementation expected by the end of the year.

Google: Operators of NFTs Must Be Fully Transparent to Users

Google announced a new policy on July 12th, with several key points:

Operators Must Provide Disclaimers and Not Glamorize Profits

If an app or game allows users to earn tokenized digital assets, developers must clearly state this and not promote or glamorize potential profits related to the game or transactions.

Apps Ineligible for Gambling Must Not Incorporate NFTs in Staking or Lottery Mechanisms

According to Google Play's gambling, gaming, and contest policies, apps that do not meet gambling eligibility requirements are not allowed to have users invest fiat currency to obtain assets with unknown real-world value, including NFTs. For example:

  • At the time of purchasing an NFT, its actual value is not clear.

  • Users must not indirectly purchase NFTs through random draw mechanisms, such as loot boxes in games.

Note: Google clarified to the media outlet Decrypt that the term "staking" here refers to gambling terminology and does not prohibit staking mechanisms in the cryptocurrency field.

Prohibition of Mining Apps

Google continues its existing policy of prohibiting mining apps on mobile devices but allows apps that remotely monitor and manage mining activities.

Google Play Store: NFTs Can "Empower" and Unlock Content

Google representatives also pointed out that Google allows apps to unlock specific content through NFTs, whether purchased within the app or held in a wallet. This policy stands in stark contrast to Apple's approach.

In their announcement, Google mentioned that they will continue to collaborate with developers to understand and support the establishment of sustainable businesses through blockchain technology. They are currently discussing the next steps with industry partners, including areas such as the secondary market.
