The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) submitted a patent application to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) last Thursday, targeting to provide an online marketplace for various goods including NFTs, cryptocurrencies, digital media, and artwork.

New York Stock Exchange Trademark Application

The New York Stock Exchange's trademark application showcases its ambitions to enter the crypto industry, aiming to provide an online marketplace for various goods such as NFTs, cryptocurrencies, digital media, and artworks, potentially introducing cryptocurrencies or NFTs in the future.

However, according to a report by Bloomberg, the New York Stock Exchange does not have immediate plans to launch cryptocurrencies or NFTs, but will regularly consider new products and their impact on their trademark, protecting the exchange's intellectual property accordingly.

It is currently uncertain whether the New York Stock Exchange is preemptively applying for the trademark, but if they do indeed launch an NFT trading marketplace in the future, it would be the first market supported by an official financial entity in the current free market, competing with well-known markets like OpenSea and Rarible.

Past NFT Issuance Records

The New York Stock Exchange previously issued a set of NFTs on Crypto.com in April last year, consisting of 6 pieces, to commemorate 6 popular tech stocks listed on the exchange, namely Unity, Coupang, Snowflake, Spotify, Roblox, and DoorDash. However, these NFTs were commemorative and not available for sale in the market.
