World Economic Forum: Chainlink and MakerDAO will be pioneers in disrupting industry rules

The World Economic Forum (WEF) announced the "2020 Technology Pioneers" list yesterday. This year, the list includes six blockchain startups, including the oracle project Chainlink and decentralized finance project MakerDAO. The head of the WEF Global Innovators Community stated that these pioneers will be the disruptors of industry norms in the future.

2020 Tech Pioneers

"2020 Tech Pioneers" is a list of startups recognized by the forum who are seen as industry leaders in addressing global challenges through cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, carbon capture, alternative proteins, circular economy, food security, and tech finance. Susan Nesbitt, Head of the Global Innovators Community at the World Economic Forum, stated:

"This year's tech pioneers are improving society and driving industry growth around the world. These companies span a range of industries and are potential disruptors of industry norms, and we look forward to their role in shaping the industry's future."

Among the top 100 companies announced by the WEF, six blockchain startups were selected, including Lightning Labs focusing on the Lightning Network, Chainlink's oracle project, decentralized finance project MakerDAO, Bitcoin analytics company Elliptic, tech finance startup Ripio in Central and South America, and carbon credit tokenization project Veridium Labs.

Chainlink's co-founder Sergey Nazarov also expressed excitement within the development team for this honor.

"Using smart contracts on the blockchain can provide guarantees for contract fulfillment and bring broad social and economic benefits. Being able to achieve accountability and automation in the global and local economy, we are very proud."

Increasing Attention on Blockchain Startups

Since 2000, many well-known tech giants have been on the World Economic Forum's list. Past honorees include Google, Airbnb, Mozilla, Kickstarter, Spotify, Twitter, Palantir, and TransferWise, among others. However, in recent years, blockchain startups have been gaining more recognition.

In 2015, global payment service provider Ripple was awarded the WEF Tech Pioneer Award for its distributed ledger technology, as reported. Additionally, in 2016, the forum recognized Blockchain.com, a startup that enables millions worldwide to perform identity verification and peer-to-peer payments, playing a significant role in the field of cryptocurrency payments.
