Facebook Founder Talks Next 10 Years: Focuses on Decentralization Opportunities, Not Libra

Mark Zuckerberg has released his vision for 2030, outlining a 10-year goal list for his social media platform, including new governance forms, decentralized financial services, and enhanced privacy.

Decentralization Opportunity

In the post, Zuckerberg mentioned that in the next 10 years, he hopes to build more accessible commerce and payment systems, allowing every small business to easily adopt the same technology previously available only to large companies. He stated:

Anyone can sell products through business features on Instagram, communicate with customers through Messenger, or conduct global fund transfers at extremely low costs through WhatsApp, which will help create more opportunities for the world.

He believes, "A strong and stable economy comes from the success of a broad population, and the best way to achieve this is to enable small businesses to effectively become tech companies."

No Mention of Libra

Zuckerberg did not mention the Libra project he has been working on for a year. Although he deliberately kept his distance from Libra, both Zuckerberg and David Marcus, a director of the Libra Association, attended a hearing on the project together.

Reports indicate that as Zuckerberg mentioned in his 10-year vision, the widespread adoption of VR (virtual reality) technology could allow people to work from anywhere, addressing housing and high housing prices crises. However, he also did not mention his subsidiary focused on VR technology, Oculus.

ABM previously reported that the initial partners in the Libra project (including PayPal, Visa, Mastercard, etc.) withdrew from the project one after another in October of last year, and the scheduled launch in June 2020 continues to be questioned under regulatory pressure from various governments.

Mark Zuckerberg's 10-Year Vision Overview

Zuckerberg outlined his vision for the next decade as "Generational Change," "New Privacy-Focused Social Platform," "Decentralization Opportunity," "New Generation Computing Platform," and "New Forms of Oversight." Several key points include:

AR - In the next 10 years, mobile phones will remain the primary platform, but at some point in the 2020s, AR (augmented reality) will experience breakthrough growth, bringing people closer together.

VR - Better virtual reality technology can enable people to work from anywhere, addressing housing crises.

Privacy - The internet has created a global community where individuals may struggle to establish their uniqueness. Facebook will enhance more private interactions and rebuild various smaller communities to bring users closer together.

Oversight - The technical issues faced are too complex for private companies to solve on their own. Governments must intervene in elections, content moderation, and privacy. Facebook has established a supervisory board to try to address this issue and prevent excessive and cumbersome legislation. Regarding the ongoing issue of misinformation, Zuckerberg mentioned new governance forms, emphasizing:

Platforms like Facebook must balance the societal values we all cherish and find a balance between freedom of speech and security, between privacy and law enforcement. There are rarely clear correct answers, but I believe that governments establishing clearer rules will help, including new regulations in areas such as elections and harmful content.
