Post about pandemic information restricted from being shared? Founder of research firm Messari clashes with Twitter

The cryptocurrency research institution Messari, in addition to providing blockchain analysis, has recently been tracking real-time updates on confirmed cases, deaths, fatality rates, and latest developments of the novel coronavirus on its official website amidst the widespread outbreak. However, the CEO of Messari pointed out on the 20th that Twitter deliberately suspended Messari and his personal account due to his posts related to the novel coronavirus, and claimed that we need a "decentralized Twitter."

Shadow Ban: Your Posts Are Invisible to Users

Including two accounts, Messari and its founder Ryan Selkis, both accounts were offline for several hours. However, by the time of this article's submission, they seemed to be able to post normally again.

Note: Shadowban means a reduced reach (i.e., post exposure) for the account. When the account is "potentially" in violation of relevant community rules (including hate speech, false information, or reports), the platform deliberately hides the account's posts from "non-following users."

It is reported that this may be an unintended consequence of Twitter's efforts to regulate false information. Paul Graham, the founder of Silicon Valley's renowned incubator Y Combinator, tagged Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey in a tweet, pointing out that there are too many unaccredited "experts" on Twitter and the need to increase visibility for real medical experts to identify correct information.

Upon understanding this, Jack Dorsey promptly took action and announced collaboration with global health organizations to verify medical experts on Twitter to eliminate false information related to the coronavirus.

The broader crypto community has rallied against the "Shadow Ban" on Selkis and Messari, expressing their support through comments and retweets on Twitter, acknowledging the institution's contributions to the cryptocurrency field over the years.

It is understood that the COVID-19 has infected over 18,500 cases in the United States, with nearly 230 deaths. The U.S. government is also considering distributing checks to the public (excluding high-income earners) to weather the storm and alleviate the economic impact resulting from large-scale shutdowns.
