Investment Data | "2017 Altcoin Portfolio" vs "All in BTC" - Who Earned More?

Despite the remarkable returns Bitcoin has achieved since its inception, there have been too many altcoins with short-term explosive performances that overshadow the king of crypto, attracting investors. However, data shows that in the long run, holding only Bitcoin still outperforms a portfolio of altcoins.

How Much Were Altcoins Worth in 2017?

Recently, a Twitter user known as Stats₿TC, a Bitcoin enthusiast, shared a portfolio from CNBC in 2017:

  • 30%: Bitcoin
  • 15%: Ethereum
  • 15%: Ethereum Classic (ETC)
  • 10%: Monero (XMR)
  • 10%: Ripple (XRP)
  • 5%: IOTA (MIOTA)
  • 5%: Metal (MTL)

Based on the data provided, if $10,000 was allocated in 2017 according to the above portfolio, it would now be worth approximately $52,328.

However, 30% in Bitcoin accounted for 75% of the gains.

If one had gone "All in" on Bitcoin at that time, the investment would now be worth $141,331. The detailed returns are as follows:

An investment of $100 would now be worth nearly $6,000; however, going "All in" on Bitcoin would be $12,136, representing more than double the returns of a full Bitcoin portfolio.

The Fascination with Altcoins Continues

The CNBC portfolio was provided by Brian Kelly, the founder and CEO of digital asset investment firm BKCM, and a member of CNBC's investment show "Fast Money."

In reality, altcoins often exhibit astonishing explosive power, with their price surges often surpassing that of Bitcoin within a period of time. Despite their volatile nature, they continue to attract numerous investors, such as the recent strong performers BNB, Filecoin, THETA, and more. Of course, some netizens criticize Brian Kelly's asset allocation as being poor.

However, Bitcoin's market dominance has continued to decline recently, falling to 57.9% in September last year, while the market value of altcoins is on the rise.

This phenomenon has led many analysts to predict the upcoming altcoin season. However, considering Bitcoin's historically strong performance in the second quarter of each year, this may indicate further growth in the cryptocurrency market value. How to select altcoins and optimize investment portfolios will be crucial tasks ahead.
