One chain, one application: Ethereum Name Service (ENS) announces the development of Namechain on Layer 2 at Devcon.

The well-known Ethereum Name Service (ENS) protocol announced the launch of its own Layer 2 solution, named Namechain, at Devcon in Bangkok. This initiative aligns with ENS's domain name service. ENS allows users to create unique identifiers followed by .eth, such as vitalik.eth. With the established protocol ENS venturing into application and public chains, the concept of an Ethereum federation may be gradually taking shape.

Ethereum Mainnet Domain Names to be Compatible with L2 Domain Names

The source indicates that unlike other application chains such as Unichain, which use Optimistic Rollup's OP Stack, Namechain will be a zkEVM Layer 2. The official announcement states that launching Layer 2 is the next step for ENS and is part of ENS V2. By significantly reducing costs, improving efficiency, and providing a development experience familiar to Ethereum developers, ENS sees Namechain as a new opportunity for itself and Ethereum's vibrant development.

The goal of ENS Labs is to deploy the mainnet by the end of 2025, and after the launch, existing ENS domain names on the Ethereum mainnet will be compatible with the domain names on Namechain.

Can ENS User Base Multiply with a 99% Cost Reduction by Migrating to L2?

In fact, as early as May of this year, ENS Labs proposed migrating the core functions of ENS to Layer 2 because a more efficient network can provide users with a better experience. ENS Labs stated that after the launch of Namechain, the cost for users to use the ENS protocol will decrease by 99%, and this visible change is a major innovation in making ENS more widely used.

However, as many have pointed out, there are currently 117 Layer 2 and Layer 3 solutions, and the problem of fragmented liquidity is becoming increasingly severe. Unichain and other Layer 2 solutions use OP Stack tools and are part of Superchain. Namechain, on the other hand, may be confident in the protocol itself, which has already created over 2000 domain names.
