BloXroute has completed testing on the Ethereum testnet, cutting block propagation time in half.

Recently, blockchain consulting and product development company Akomba Labs confirmed through testing on the Ethereum network that BloXroute Labs, a blockchain startup focusing on scalability, successfully reduced block propagation time on the Ethereum mainnet by half.

Two companies collaborated on a two-week test to measure the results of running BloXroute's Blockchain Distribution Network (BDN) on the Ethereum network:

They found that the average block propagation time, which is the time needed to produce and share the entire blockchain, dropped to 172 milliseconds, less than half of the current average of 360 milliseconds.

This result suggests that BDN may have a moderate chain effect on block propagation in the Ethereum mainnet, with bloXroute's CEO Uri Klarman stating that Ethereum is more scalable bottlenecked than any other blockchain. He said:

It's losing momentum, it's losing market share, and most people are not aware of this problem.

BloXroute's approach is a layer 0 solution that can reduce transaction sizes, thus speeding up block propagation time. In simple terms, BDN can process 500 data transactions by broadcasting 4 pieces of data. BloXroute aims not to privilege any blockchain but rather to simplify the scaling of each blockchain. Klarman added:

We don't send the entire data block because if other nodes already know the data, you don't need to send the actual data itself, just information that the data exists.

Currently, BDN is operational in some mining pools and will continue to be gradually introduced to larger pools. Once completed, block capacity will increase, and costs may decrease. Klarman also mentioned on his Twitter:

We not only aim to make the network faster but also to ensure that the speed doesn't slow down as the blocks grow.

In September, Ethereum miners voted to increase the GAS limit to 10 million from the previous limit, a 25% increase. This was done to alleviate network congestion, but the increased demand quickly consumed this space, leading to what BloXroute is currently addressing.
