Solana experiences its eighth downtime, halting block production for another four hours

Solana, self-proclaimed high-performance blockchain, experienced its second block production halt within a month, lasting several hours. The founder of Chain News remarked that its consensus algorithm should be called Proof of Restart.

Another Four-Hour Shutdown

According to official data from Solana Status, the mainnet was interrupted for about 4.5 hours due to the blockchain network's failure to reach consensus. Node operators have restarted around 05:00 on 6/2, and other DApps and services are expected to resume within a few hours.

Anatoly Yakovenko, co-founder of Solana Labs, stated that the Durable Nonce caused some nodes to consider a block invalid, leading to the inability to reach consensus.

Austin Federa, Head of Communications at Solana Labs, pointed out that the network's ability to process random numbers failed, causing validators to treat it as two separate transactions at different block heights, disrupting Solana's consensus mechanism.

The Eighth Shutdown

On May 1 of this year, the Solana mainnet also experienced a seven-hour block halt due to a surge in transactions, causing verification nodes to run out of memory and crash. The official response to this was to introduce a transaction fee priority mechanism, expected to be implemented in version v1.11.

Additionally, on May 26, a "mainnet block clock skew" occurred, where the chain's timing lagged behind real-world time by approximately 30 minutes, potentially impacting verification nodes and stakers, leading to a decrease in staking rewards.

According to Solana's official data, this marks the eighth performance degradation or network interruption delay event experienced by the mainnet.

Liu Feng, founder of Chain News, also tweeted that Solana's downtime is no longer news.
