Ethereum Name Service (ENS) project expands to Layer 2, launching gasless DNS domain functionality in Q3

With the continuous development of Layer2, Ethereum Name Service (ENS) expressed ambitions to integrate with Layer2 in a recent conference call, and announced the launch of new features in Q3 of this year.

ENS Prioritizes Interaction with Layer2

According to a report by The Block, the ENS team stated in a community call on Thursday, the 29th, that they consider interaction with Layer2 as an important direction for upgrades. By providing mechanisms for interaction between Layer2 scaling solutions and ENS domain names, the team aims to make domain registration and transactions easier to use for a larger user base.

As Layer 2 solutions like Arbitrum and Optimism are "off-chain" mechanisms used to process transactions not on the Layer 1 Ethereum, the team plans to utilize offchain resolver for ENS, including services operated by Coinbase such as cb.id, Lens Protocol, and OptiNames, among others.

These service providers will help facilitate domain resolution, allowing ENS domain names to interact more smoothly with Layer2.

Development of New Features in ENS

In addition to focusing on Layer2 integration, the ENS team also mentioned that some top-level domains like .box and .art are collaborating closely with ENS to enable users to register browser-supported names through ENS.

Furthermore, the team revealed plans to enable DNS domain names to be traded as NFTs on the Ethereum network.

During the call, discussions also revolved around new features expected to be launched in Q3 of this year, which would introduce DNS network domain protocols to ENS without transaction costs, allowing DNS domain names to be used in the ENS ecosystem without consuming Gas. The team believes this feature will help lower entry barriers for traditional internet users and enhance the network availability of the ENS ecosystem.
