Binance Smart Chain (BSC) 2022 Roadmap: Cross-chain, Multi-chain, Application Chains, Introduction of L2 Scaling Solutions

Binance Smart Chain (BSC) has released its new vision for 2022, aiming to scale up to one billion users. The plan includes many popular concepts such as cross-chain, multi-chain, application chain, and L2.

Attempt to Reduce Validator and Operational Node Requirements

BSC indicates that the current block size is quite large, and advanced logic is needed for block storage and clients to expand. Currently, to fully synchronize the BSC blockchain, validators require a large amount of storage space and time. To achieve a seamless BSC experience, the requirements for validators and node operators must be reduced.

BSC believes that technologies such as Erigon may help improve data storage efficiency and performance, benefiting EVM-compatible blockchains, reducing operational burdens, and enhancing decentralization.

Cross-Chain and Multi-Chain

BSC believes that a single chain cannot contain all aspects. For example, when GameFi is popular, it occupies half of BSC's daily active users, posing challenges to the infrastructure. Therefore, for DApps with a large number of users, multi-chain and cross-chain will be the solution. BSC believes that applications such as games, social, and finance should not compete for resources, and the cost and transaction speed can also rely on more than one blockchain. Thus, BSC sees the future in cross-chain and multi-chain, aligning with the multi-chain strategies of ETH 2.0, Polkadot, Cosmos, and Avalanche.

Application Sidechain BAS, Split Chain BPC

The application sidechain BAS is an infrastructure designed to help developers and node operators build and operate their own blockchain as an internal value system, providing services to a large number of users while maintaining close ties with BSC. Similar to Axie Infinity's Ronin blockchain.

The split chain BPC will introduce another sub-space with a new set of validators, a new computation engine, and a new ledger. It will operate like a sharding or L2 second-layer solution, distributing some data, computation, and transactions from the BSC mainnet to smaller parallel blockchains.

Finally, BSC plans to build a larger developer community and host a hackathon in February, as well as the BSC 2022 conference in the first half of the year.
