Coinbase announces the launch of Base Mainnet on August 9th, introducing the commemorative NFT "Onchain Summer".

In February this year, Coinbase announced the launch of the L2 coinless public chain Base Gas built on Optimism technology, which will use ETH as its base. The mainnet is set to go live on August 9th. As part of the launch, Coinbase has invited many well-known brands to participate in the "Onchain Summer" event on the chain and also released the free minting NFT "Onchain Summer."

Coinbase: Base Mainnet Officially Launched on August 9

In addition to announcing the mainnet launch date, Coinbase has also launched "Onchain Summer" to build momentum, with over 50 brands, platforms, and creators participating, including Coca-Cola, game developer Atari, NFT trading platform OpenSea, and more.

OpenSea also announced that the platform now supports the Base mainnet.

Note: The Base developer mainnet went live on July 13, providing the Portal Proxy Contract for cross-chain functionality, as well as tools such as the PRC endpoint for crypto wallets, which led to a surge in meme coin speculation at the end of July.

Base NFT Free Minting

Coinbase stated that users who mint NFTs as part of "Onchain Summer" can enjoy a 60-day free subscription to the "Coinbase One" zero-fee plan and earn a $50 reward by participating in activities listed on the Coinbase Wallet.

"Onchain Summer" offers free minting, allowing users to mint NFTs across chains with one click by logging in via wallets like MetaMask and clicking "BRIDGE AND MINT FOR FREE."

Base Mainnet TVL Plummets by Sixty Percent

In February of this year, Coinbase announced the launch of Base, with the developer mainnet going live on July 13.

At the end of July, various meme coins emerged on the Base chain, with $BALD attracting the most attention due to suspicions of its high association with Coinbase and founder Brian Armstrong.

However, the issuer of BALD performed a Rug Pull after the token's price skyrocketed, abruptly ending the meme coin craze.

Additionally, the largest decentralized exchange on the Base chain, Leetswap, fell victim to an attack, resulting in the attacker gaining 340 ETH, leading to a sharp decline in Base Mainnet TVL from a peak of $41.2 million to $14.93 million.

  • Base meme coin BALD plummeted by over 80%, analyzing meme coins as traps that promise riches but lure investors into pitfalls

  • Base chain's largest DEX Leetswap attacked, losing over $630,000
