Intense Competition in Modular Racetrack | Polygon CDK Integrates Celestia to Enhance Competitiveness

According to a press release from Polygon, the leading Data Availability (DA) layer project, Celestia, will collaborate and integrate with the Layer2 development framework tool, Polygon CDK. In the future, networks choosing to deploy Rollups using CDK will be able to seamlessly utilize Celestia services. This collaboration is expected to enhance the competitiveness of both parties in the fiercely competitive modular field.

Background Information

What is Celestia

Celestia provides Data Availability (DA) layer and a series of solutions that allow Rollups to store complete transaction information on an external network rather than on Ethereum, reducing the overall cost of Rollups and speeding up the deployment of modular blockchains.

In recent years, modular blockchains have seen significant growth, with players responsible for data availability layers including Celestia, as well as:

  • Polygon Avail
  • NEAR DA
  • EigenDA
  • BNB Greenfield

Furthermore, aside from numerous competitors, existing stakeholders in the Ethereum ecosystem are not keen on value overflow to other ecosystems. Therefore, there are plans to introduce EIP-4844 in the future to lower the on-chain fees for Rollups through consensus adjustments at the protocol layer. As a result, the market for DAs may be restricted, prompting most competitors to aim for a mainnet launch in the near future.

What is Polygon CDK

Polygon CDK (Polygon Chain Development Kit) is a development framework that enables teams to quickly build Layer2 networks based on zero-knowledge proofs. Projects considering or deciding to use Polygon CDK to develop their own Layer2 networks include prominent players such as OKX, Kraken, Immutable zkEVM, Canto, and Gnosis Pay.

In addition to Polygon CDK, there are also several competitors offering similar network construction tools:

  • Optimism's OP Stack
  • Arbitrum's Arbitrum Orbit
  • zkSync's ZK Stack

Arbitrum Orbit announced a partnership with Celestia last month, intensifying competition in this space.

Celestia to Integrate with Polygon CDK

Enhancing Polygon CDK's Competitiveness

Today, Celestia announced a collaboration with Polygon CDK, which means teams choosing to build networks using the latter can conveniently utilize Celestia as the data availability layer for the network. This integration will serve as an easily usable plugin component within Polygon CDK's customization options, available for developers to choose from.

Using Celestia is expected to reduce 99% of the on-chain costs for Layer2 networks, and the integration will lower the barrier to building ZKP-based Layer2 networks, attracting more developers to join the ecosystem.

The integration project is expected to be completed early next year.

Polygon co-founder Sandeep Nailwal expressed that in the future, developers will be able to easily launch Rollups networks supported by ZKPs as effortlessly as deploying smart contracts.

Collaboration is Imperative

For Polygon CDK, reducing the barrier for developers is crucial to attract them to the ecosystem; for Celestia, it helps penetrate the Ethereum ecosystem, increasing trust and acceptance from other Ethereum projects.
