Gitcoin launches blockchain passport Gitcoin Passport, collecting "stamps" to prove experiences on the chain

The open-source software funding platform Gitcoin has announced the development of a decentralized network passport called "Gitcoin Passport," which allows protocol parties to verify user identities without the need for intermediaries. Users can earn "stamps" by participating in the community and dApps to help develop their reputation on the blockchain.

Introduction to Gitcoin Passport

"Many emerging applications on the blockchain, such as Play-to-Earn games, quadratic funding, and on-chain voting, all assume that every community participant is acting in good faith. However, since the blockchain allows the use of pseudonyms, how can reputation be established in a trustless environment without sacrificing user privacy?" Gitcoin stated.

To address this issue, the Gitcoin team is currently developing a decentralized identity solution called "Gitcoin Passport." Users can collect "stamps" from various web2 and web3 identity verifiers like Proof of Humanity, POAP, or ENS.

These stamps are verifiable credentials. Once integrated with Passport, protocols no longer need to rely on intermediaries to verify user identities. Instead, they can use custom algorithms to verify based on the stamps users hold and weight different stamps according to their needs. This allows communities to create custom visas based on their requirements.

For example, joining a developer community may require a stamp from Github, while an artist group may require a stamp from Foundation.

"Just as university degrees, payment bills, and award records bring tangible offline reputation, we believe that verifying online identities through blockchain tracking of community participation and dApp usage can help develop online reputation," Gitcoin stated.

Establishing decentralized identity can effectively defend against Sybil attacks while protecting user privacy. Additionally, Passport's scoring algorithm and verifiable credentials allow Gitcoin Grants to verify user identities without viewing personal information.

Using Gitcoin Passport

Currently, Gitcoin Passport is available for use. Users can link different websites and protocols to obtain stamps after connecting their wallets. Protocol partners can also integrate this feature.
