According to a report by the official UAE news agency WAM on 10/6, the MOCD announced a competition called "Social Blockathon" with a total prize of $16,300 to encourage engineers to develop blockchain applications for educational, social, and entertainment purposes.

As per the report, submissions for the competition are open until 2/20/2020, and the MOCD announced the competition during the GITEX Technology Week held in Dubai World Trade Center from 10/6 to 10/10.

Winners of the competition will be rewarded with the UAE legal currency Dirham (AED), with the first prize winner receiving 30,000 AED ($8,200), the second and third prize winners receiving 20,000 AED ($5,400) and 10,000 AED ($2,700) respectively. The winners will be announced during the UAE Innovation Month in February 2020.

In this competition, participants are challenged to develop blockchain-supported applications within a limited timeframe and are not allowed to use pre-designed software and applications.

UAE Embracing Blockchain

The MOCD is responsible for formulating and implementing social policies and legislation in the UAE, overseeing social welfare institutions, and developing certain policies related to marriage and other aspects of life in the UAE.

They are also working towards improving the country's social development by achieving the goals of the national development agenda "UAE Vision 2021," which sets key themes for the social and economic development of the UAE and calls for diversified development.

Furthermore, in November 2018, the MOCD launched a proof of concept based on ProximaX Sirius blockchain to begin implementing blockchain initiatives.

In September this year, the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention initiated a blockchain system for recording and sharing medical data. Earlier this year, the Dubai Land Department of the Dubai Land Authority collaborated with Mashreq Bank, based in the UAE, to release a blockchain-based mortgage platform.
