According to a report by South Korea's Asian Daily, citing data from the Korean Intellectual Property Office, the number of patents related to "metaverse" filed with the Intellectual Property Five Offices (IP5) in South Korea, the United States, Japan, China, the European Union, etc., has grown by an average of 16.1% over the past decade (2011 to 2020). In the past five years (2016 to 2020), the number of applications submitted by the aforementioned five countries and regions was 43,698, nearly three times the 14,983 applications filed from 2011 to 2015.

According to the South Korean Asia Daily, citing data from the Korean Patent Office, the number of "metaverse"-related patents filed with the IP5 intellectual property offices in South Korea, the United States, Japan, China, and the European Union has grown by an average of 16.1% per year over the past decade from 2011 to 2020. In the past five years from 2016 to 2020, the number of applications submitted by the aforementioned five countries and regions totaled 43,698, nearly three times the 14,983 applications filed from 2011 to 2015.

Looking at the nationalities of the applicants from 2011 to 2020, the United States leads with 17,293 applications, accounting for 35.9%, followed by China with 14,291 applications (29.7%) and South Korea with 7,808 applications (16.2%). In terms of the global ranking of applying companies, Microsoft from the U.S. ranks first with 1,437 applications, followed by IBM with 1,212 applications and Samsung Electronics with 1,173 applications.
