Apple becomes AI service platform, collaborates with OpenAI without payment?

Apple announced its artificial intelligence AI plan at the WWDC on 6/10, including the integration of OpenAI's ChatGPT feature that Siri can use when needed. Apple's AAPL stock price has recently hit new highs, surpassing Microsoft and reclaiming the top spot in market value. According to a report by Bloomberg, Apple did not pay OpenAI for using the chatbot, indicating a possible distribution partnership.

Apple Does Not Pay OpenAI for Chatbot Usage

Bloomberg reported that according to sources, the collaboration between Apple and OpenAI will not bring significant revenue to either party, at least not initially.

Sources stated that as part of the partnership, Apple will not be paying OpenAI for their services. Instead, Apple believes that leveraging OpenAI's brand and technology on its hundreds of millions of devices holds greater monetary value.

While Apple announced that ChatGPT will be offered for free on its products, OpenAI and Apple can still generate income by converting free users into paid accounts, such as introducing a paid mechanism like Apple Intelligence plus with more features. Currently, ChatGPT's subscription plan starts at $20 per month, covering additional features like data analysis and the ability to generate more types of images, alongside a more basic free service.

Apple to Earn AI Revenue Through Revenue Sharing Agreements

Apple is not only collaborating with OpenAI but is also reportedly in talks with Google's Gemini chatbot. Anthropic is another potential partner.

Sources mentioned that ultimately, Apple aims to earn from artificial intelligence through signing revenue-sharing agreements. Through these agreements, Apple can receive a portion of profits from AI partners who profit from the results of chatbots on Apple's platform. Apple believes that AI could potentially take away billions of dollars it earns from Google search transactions, as users may prefer chatbots over search engines. Apple is devising new strategies to achieve this goal.

Stock Cancer Predicts Apple to Become an AI Service Platform

Taiwanese financial podcaster Stock Cancer predicted last week when introducing MediaTek's generative AI service platform "Dage" that Apple would adopt a similar strategy. As Apple operates as a platform with high brand value and fan loyalty, integrating AI features well could make it a big winner without requiring high R&D costs.

This could include charging Apple fans for AI-enabled Siri services. Conversely, AI model manufacturers might end up paying Apple to become the default AI model on iPhones, similar to how Google pays Apple to become the default search engine on iPhones.

Additionally, within the App Store or by creating a GPT Store, opening up the use of Apple's designated AI models for app development could also generate revenue for Apple through App downloads.

Apple's stock price has also performed well, hitting new highs for several consecutive days, surpassing Microsoft and reclaiming the top position in market value.
