AI and media empower each other, OpenAI signs cooperation agreement with Axel Springer

OpenAI has signed an agreement with Axel Springer, the parent company of renowned business and political media outlets Business Insider and Politico, allowing ChatGPT to utilize their media content for AI training purposes. In return, Axel Springer gains access to OpenAI's technology for development.

Utilizing High-Quality Media Content for AI Training

Axel Springer, one of Europe's largest digital publishing companies, owns media outlets such as Business Insider, Politico, as well as European publications Bild and Welt.

Axel Springer announced a collaboration with OpenAI, allowing ChatGPT to extract information from articles published by Axel Springer, including their premium content. ChatGPT will also provide links to the full stories for transparency. This partnership also involves utilizing Axel Springer's high-quality media content to advance OpenAI's complex large language models training.

A statement mentioned that the collaboration also allows Axel Springer to utilize OpenAI's technology for development.

CEO of Axel Springer, Mathias Döpfner, stated:

We want to explore the opportunities of artificial intelligence in empowering the news industry and elevate the quality, societal relevance, and business models of journalism to a new level.

If You Can't Control AI, You'll Be Destroyed by It

According to a report by Axios in April, Nicholas Carlson, Global Editor-in-Chief of Business Insider, mentioned that their company has started experimenting with AI methods in the news industry. They established a task force to test how to responsibly integrate AI into workflows, then introduced a set of AI rules and best practices to newsrooms. The team will try using AI-generated text in stories and encourage others in the newsroom to use AI to generate story outlines, correct spelling errors, optimize titles for search engines, and prepare interview questions.

Carlson acknowledged that while generative AI tools like ChatGPT are helpful for research and improving sentence structure, "the illusion could be a real problem." The use of AI is still in its early stages and must be carefully monitored. However, it remains a very rich and powerful tool.

The tsunami is coming, if we can't control it, we will be destroyed by it.

The Pros and Cons of AI in Media

Since the emergence of ChatGPT at the end of last year, chatbots have become a hot topic and a battleground, but the data behind the success of AI applications in answering questions may have source controversies, and their authenticity is also a major concern.

The rise of AI has also raised concerns about copyright infringement in the media. According to a report by The Verge, The New York Times, BBC, CNN, Reuters, and The Verge's parent company Vox Media are trying to prevent OpenAI's web crawlers from accessing their data.

However, some media outlets are actively embracing AI. The New York Times announced hiring a senior newsroom executive to oversee artificial intelligence projects, while Forbes has established an AI-driven search engine for its articles.
