According to Fortune's report, members of the family of U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump were hacked recently due to posting "cryptocurrency project scam" related posts on Twitter.

Eric Trump, Donald Trump's son, claimed on Twitter that accounts of his wife Lara Trump and Trump's daughter Tiffany Trump were used to promote a cryptocurrency project called World Liberty Financial, which turned out to be a "scam." He added that Twitter locked these unidentified accounts within "minutes."

What is World Liberty Financial?

World Liberty Financial is a crypto project centered around a "credit account system" that facilitates decentralized lending, built on Ethereum and AAVE. It is reportedly endorsed by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and his three sons (Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, and 18-year-old Barron Trump). However, the full details of the project have not been disclosed to the public.

Republican Chair's Twitter Account Hacked in Phishing Attack

Lara Trump, Eric Trump's wife, was appointed as co-chair of the Republican National Committee earlier this year. A now-deleted post on Lara Trump's Twitter mentioned that World Liberty Financial aims to "take power back from the traditional financial system and return it to the people," emphasizing to "ensure that the American people have full control of their finances."

The post included a link to what appeared to be a phishing website filled with Donald Trump's images, claiming that World Liberty Financial has a token built on the Solana blockchain named $WL. These tokens are purportedly designed for micro-payments and an upcoming decentralized finance (DeFi) lending protocol. The website also provided instructions on how to connect a digital wallet to purchase the tokens.

Following the incident, Trump's campaign team did not immediately respond. World Liberty Financial's Twitter account warned against clicking on any links from Eric Trump's wife, Lara, and Trump's daughter Tiffany on Twitter accounts or purchasing any tokens.

Trump Actively Seeks Support from Crypto Community

Recently, Trump has been actively seeking donations and votes from individuals in the crypto community, pledging to make the U.S. the "global capital of cryptocurrency." His sons Eric and Don Jr. have also been promoting World Liberty Financial's DeFiant Ones Telegram channel since August.

Phishing Attacks Rampant, Crypto Assets at Risk

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of information security for crypto assets. With the popularity of cryptocurrencies, phishing attacks and scams are on the rise. Whether a political figure or an average user, vigilance against phishing websites and suspicious links is crucial. When using cryptocurrencies, always verify the legitimacy of projects and avoid clicking on unknown links or engaging in unverified transactions.
