Norway Warned Meta in July

Reuters reported that the Norwegian data protection authority Datatilsynet issued a warning in mid-July, stating that Meta has been collecting user data in Norway for targeted advertising, a practice not allowed in Norway.

Tobias Judin, head of Datatilsynet's international department, stated that unless Meta makes improvements, fines will be imposed daily from August 4 to November 3.

Datatilsynet has also reported to the European Data Protection Board, and if approved, Meta may face permanent fines that could extend to other European countries.

Meta Fined $90,000 Daily

As Meta did not demonstrate any improvements to the regulatory authorities before August 4, Tobias Judin announced that starting from August 14, a daily fine of 1 million Norwegian krone, approximately $93,958, will be imposed.

Tobias Judin stated:

Last week, Meta planned to seek user consent to allow targeted advertising based on browsing content from apps like Facebook and Instagram. However, this is insufficient as Meta must immediately stop data collection until the consent mechanism is in place. Meta claims that it will take several months to prepare for the consent mechanism, and we are not clear on what this "consent mechanism" entails.
