The United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres recently stated that the United Nations must embrace blockchain technology to accelerate the achievement of sustainable development goals.

According to a statement provided by Guterres to Forbes, Guterres clearly stated:

In order for the United Nations to more effectively fulfill its responsibilities in the digital age, we need to adopt technologies like blockchain to accelerate the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This is not the first time Guterres has highly praised the potential of blockchain technology. As early as July last year, Guterres established a technical organization called the High-Level Panel on Digital Cooperation, which specifically included blockchain technology in its agenda.

The United Nations and Blockchain

During a speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September 2018, Guterres mentioned the "trust imbalance" that arises from a lack of global trust and stated:

With the support of artificial intelligence and other technologies, blockchain can partially address this issue. It helps understand the internal operations of global organizations.

In addition, Guterres also pointed out the potential of blockchain in achieving Sustainable Development Goals. The 17 SDGs, including poverty eradication and proof of origin for goods, were set in 2015 and are expected to be completed by 2030.

Many related use cases have also been reported. In October of this year, the UNICEF announced an experimental program to accept Bitcoin and Ethereum donations and further collaborate with children's foundations in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and France.

It is worth noting that UNICEF took a bold step in this donation program by accepting cryptocurrencies without converting them into fiat currency. This move may also be imitated by other relevant international organizations.
