The U.S. Department of Justice warns Elon Musk

The U.S. Department of Justice recently issued a warning letter to Elon Musk regarding the "Daily $1 Million Cash Giveaway Plan" organized by his U.S. political action committee America PAC, stating that it may violate federal campaign finance laws.

Controversy Arises Over Daily Million-Dollar Giveaway Incentive

Last week, Musk announced that he would donate $1 million daily to voters who sign petitions advocating for free speech and gun rights, specifically targeting registered voters in seven swing states such as Pennsylvania and Michigan. These swing states are the most fiercely contested battlegrounds between Trump and Harris.

Footnote 1: The economic conditions and industrial structures of these swing states, such as Pennsylvania's steel industry and Michigan's automotive industry, are deeply influenced by national policies. The voter demographics are also diverse, including blue-collar workers, suburban voters, young voters, minorities, etc. Pennsylvania and Michigan were won by Trump with a very narrow margin in 2016, but Biden successfully flipped them in 2020. Therefore, both parties see these states as crucial areas that can be contested and have the potential to swing the election.

US Department of Justice Issues Warning Letter, Federal Law

According to federal law in the United States, it is illegal for anyone to influence another person's voting behavior or registration through money or other valuable items, whether it is to encourage them to vote, abstain from voting, or support or oppose specific candidates. If the violation is intentional, it may result in a fine or imprisonment of up to two years. While Musk's petition does not require voters to provide their political leanings when signing, personal information such as email addresses and phone numbers will be collected.

The US Department of Justice has issued a warning letter to Musk's America PAC, stating that this activity falls into a gray area and may violate federal campaign laws. According to reports, the warning letter was exposed on 10/23. The exact date of issuance is still unclear, and a spokesperson for the US Department of Justice has declined to comment on the matter.
