Software tycoon John McAfee passes away! Just ruled for extradition back to the U.S., but found dead by hanging in Spanish prison.

In 2020, after being arrested by the Spanish police, John McAfee wrote a tweet from prison: "If I hang myself here, it will be no fault of mine." It now seems that his words have turned into reality.

The National Court of Spain ruled on the 23rd to approve the extradition of McAfee antivirus software founder John McAfee to the United States for trial. However, less than half a day later, in the afternoon local time in Spain, McAfee was found dead in prison at the age of 75 (1945.9.18-2021.6.23).

McAfee was detained in the prison of Sant Esteve de Sesrovires. According to reports, prison authorities found McAfee hanged, and although further forensic examination will be conducted, it is currently believed to be a suicide.

McAfee's lawyer Javier Villalba also told Reuters that his cause of death was suicide. McAfee had been in prison for 8 months, and Javier Villalba said that McAfee expressed that he couldn't bear being in prison anymore. "This is the result of a cruel system, there is no reason to keep someone in prison for so long," the lawyer said.

Once a software giant and cryptocurrency investor, McAfee was indicted by the United States for alleged tax evasion and fraud. He was arrested on October 3, 2020, at the airport in Barcelona, as he was preparing to travel to Turkey. The U.S. Department of Justice accused McAfee of evading taxes amounting to millions of dollars from profits obtained through activities such as cryptocurrency trading, and Spain arrested him at the request of the U.S. Department of Justice.

McAfee faced tax evasion charges from the Tennessee state prosecutors in the U.S., alleging that he evaded millions of dollars in taxes by promoting cryptocurrencies and selling the rights to his biography. Additionally, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) claimed that McAfee used Twitter to promote the purchase of cryptocurrencies to his followers and profited from it. According to prosecutors, McAfee made $23 million (approximately 640 million New Taiwan Dollars) from these activities.

During a virtual hearing earlier this month, McAfee argued that these charges were politically motivated, repeatedly emphasizing that there was a conspiracy to end him.

From a tech software giant to a prisoner, McAfee's life was filled with dramatic controversies.

In 1986, after the world's first computer virus emerged, McAfee saw a business opportunity. In 1987, he founded the world's first computer antivirus software company, McAfee Associates, which quickly gained global popularity. In less than three years, the company's revenue reached $5 million. In 1993, McAfee's global market share reached as high as 67%.

However, in 1997, he sold about $100 million worth of shares and left McAfee Associates. He then resided in a spiritual retreat in the Belize jungle in Colorado, believing that the government was monitoring him, and possessed a large number of weapons for self-defense, even being accused of murdering a neighbor. His life was closely intertwined with issues of sex, drugs, and alcohol.
