OpenAI hits back at Musk: He

Recently, there have been reports of Tesla founder Elon Musk suing OpenAI, accusing them of being "more interested in making money than advancing AI" The latest response from OpenAI states that evidence shows Musk was the one who initially wanted to monopolize OpenAI and was unwilling to provide the promised resources.

Accusing Musk of being profit-driven, the lawsuit demands OpenAI and Sam Altman to return to their open-source roots.

OpenAI Strikes Back at Musk: Promised $1 Billion Investment, But Fell Short

When OpenAI was founded in 2015, its goal was to lead the era of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and create a future that benefits everyone. Elon Musk proposed an initial investment of up to $1 billion to kickstart this initiative, claiming he could provide what others couldn't.

Despite the grand vision, the reality fell short of expectations as Musk contributed less than $45 million, with the majority of OpenAI's funding coming from other investors who provided over $90 million.

AGI Vision Requires Billions, Musk Suggested Tying it to Tesla

As OpenAI's AGI blueprint started taking shape, the costs involved became clearer, revealing that achieving it would not just require millions, but billions.

In early 2017, the substantial computational demands of AGI were confirmed, sparking crucial discussions about OpenAI's future structure. Musk proposed closely tying OpenAI's fate to Tesla, with himself as CEO, to counter giants like Google/DeepMind and leverage Tesla's resources for OpenAI's future.

However, OpenAI, based on inclusivity, found this conflicted with the concept of centralization.

Diverging from Musk's Ideals Since 2017

Sam Altman provided evidence that since 2017, there had been a departure from Musk's ideals, leading to Musk's departure from OpenAI.

Musk to OpenAI: "You Won't Succeed"

After Musk left OpenAI in 2018, he told the team they wouldn't succeed and advised them to raise billions on their own, as he planned to develop AGI internally at Tesla.

Musk Acknowledges OpenAI's Open Sourcing is Meaningless

OpenAI also presented evidence that Musk agreed that open-sourcing AGI from OpenAI was meaningless. Co-founder Ilya Sutskever told Musk, "As we get closer to building AI, it makes sense to be less open. OpenAI's openness means everyone should benefit from the results of AI building, but not sharing science is perfectly fine," which Musk also agreed with.
