Regretting not taking bail! How bad is SBF

Since losing bail in mid-August, SBF has been residing in the Metropolitan Detention Center for over a month and a half. What is the correctional facility like, and can SBF eat well and sleep soundly?

SBF Detained for Alleged Witness Tampering

According to previous reports, SBF has been accused by the U.S. Department of Justice of violating the terms of his bail by allegedly attempting to interfere with multiple witnesses. As a result, SBF's bail has been revoked, and since mid-August, he has been detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn.

During a separate hearing, SBF's lawyer claimed that the facility lacks internet access, appropriate food, and medication. Due to limited vegetarian options, SBF has been sustaining himself on bread and water.

Who Are SBF's Potential Cellmates?

According to a report by CoinDesk, the MDC is known as one of the most notorious correctional facilities in the United States, consisting of two buildings that house over 1,600 male and female inmates, many of whom are still awaiting trial. SBF has been residing at this facility for 6 weeks since losing his bail.

As a mixed-security facility, it accommodates individuals with various criminal backgrounds, including terrorists, organized crime members, and drug traffickers. Current detainees include former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez, charged with drug trafficking, and Chinese businessman Guo Wengui, accused of fraud.

What Is Daily Life Like for SBF in Detention?

So, what is daily life like for SBF in this environment?

Reports indicate that detainees wake up at 6 AM for facility cleanup. They then engage in work duties such as facility cleaning, kitchen duties, or maintenance work.

Meal times are at 11 AM and 4 PM, consisting of cold dishes, sandwiches, moldy pound cake, and other kitchen "unidentifiable food." However, if SBF, a vegetarian, cannot accept these meals, he can purchase a peanut butter or jelly sandwich for $3.65 each, limited to 2 per day.

Rest periods are available between work and meal times, but MDC lacks outdoor recreational space, so interactions, card games, or TV viewing are confined to indoor spaces.

SBF's sleeping arrangements depend on whether he is under protective custody. If so, he will have his own cell; otherwise, he will sleep in a shared dormitory with bunk beds.

Regardless of the sleeping location, the lack of air conditioning, 24-hour dim lighting, and noisy environment at MDC make it challenging for SBF to sleep.
