OpenSea launches Copymint detection system! Detects authentic, counterfeit, and stolen artworks within seconds of being listed.
The NFT exchange OpenSea announced in May this year that it is developing image recognition technology to combat the issue of excessive NFT plagiarism. Today, OpenSea announced that this feature has been launched, and whether it is an original, a copy, or a slightly modified NFT, it will be detected and taken down immediately after being listed.

OpenSea Copymint Detection System
We’re launching a new copymint detection system today that can identify exact matches, flips, and fuzzy copies within seconds of a mint.
Check out this video from Mitch, one of our engineers, showing the system in action! ⚡️

In the demonstration video, OpenSea Trust and Safety team engineer Mitch uses Cool Cat #7943 as an example to explain the mechanism of the Copymint detection system.
In the video, Mitch sequentially creates new NFTs using the three images below, which are the original image of Cool Cat #7943, a mirrored version, and a slightly modified smiling version.
Within a few seconds of creation, the system immediately detects these as Copymint and takes them down.
According to previous reports, this system primarily trains judgment models through image recognition technology and professional manual review. Mitch mentioned that there will be continuous optimization in the future.
However, the launch of this feature has raised several questions awaiting OpenSea's response, such as whether existing plagiarized projects will be removed, whether NFT works from legally modified CC0 projects will also be detected, and whether NFTs minted through external websites are within this regulation.
