Tutorial: Proof of Attendance Protocol (POAP) NFTs for Cryptocurrency Events - Free for Collecting and Preserving Your Participation History

Participating in the development of cryptocurrency is not just about investing, but also about learning new knowledge; besides self-study, various organizations also provide online activities, lectures, forums, and other sources of information. For eager cryptocurrency enthusiasts, is there an opportunity to use blockchain to record their learning journey? POAP provides a convenient tool that allows event organizers and participants to issue or obtain NFTs representing their participation in events.

What is POAP?

POAP was founded by Argentine developer Patricio Worthalter and his team during the 2019 ETHDenver hackathon.

POAP stands for Proof of Attendance Protocol, designed as "badges for life experiences" recorded on the blockchain. Event organizers can customize the badges and distribute them to participants. The uniqueness and tamper-proof nature of NFTs are the distinctive features of blockchain event badges.

Currently, POAP is widely used in various events, including 2021's ETHDenver, The Graph, Decentraland, and SushiSwap, among many other well-known organizations.

Is it expensive for issuers to create POAP?

The answer is no. The issuance of NFTs is based on the xDai blockchain, which is Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatible, meeting the need for fast and cheap transactions.

How can participants obtain POAP?

It's super simple. Issuers provide a claim password or QR code, allowing participants to obtain POAP with their Ethereum address or email.

How to create the POAP APP?

Creating an application for proof of attendance seems straightforward. However, the advantage of POAP lies in providing an app with a user-friendly interface, making it easier for users to create and collect badges. To start your POAP collection, follow these steps:

1. Download the APP

2. Open the app, enter your Ethereum address or email, and you're done!

3. On the app's homepage, you will see the badges you own. Click "Claim" in the bottom right corner to enter the claim password or scan the QR code to obtain the badge.

Using the Sushi event badge as an example, in addition to the design, there will be a brief description of the event and the date to verify your attendance.

What can POAP collectors do?

1. Collect more POAP: Find more events!

Through this link: https://app.poap.xyz/admin/events, you can find upcoming events and have the opportunity to earn POAP. These events may assign different values to POAP, such as governance power, prize redemption, or future event participation rights.

2. People without an Ethereum address can also get POAP

Many may be introduced to blockchain for the first time at events, hence POAP allows registration with an email address. POAP will hold the badge for you, and once you create your Ethereum address, you can use this link https://app.poap.xyz/scan/, enter your email, and then link it to your Ethereum address.

3. Migrate NFTs to Ethereum

By visiting https://app.poap.xyz/scan/, you can migrate NFTs originally issued on the xDai blockchain to the Ethereum mainnet. This process incurs Ethereum network fees. This means collectors have ownership rights and can even sell badges on auction markets like OpenSea, although the official recommendation is not to sell their event experiences.

How can event organizers utilize POAP?

1. Create POAP NFTs for events

By visiting https://app.poap.xyz/admin/events, event organizers can click "Create new POAP" to generate event badges, which is entirely free. The system will email the POAP password to the organizers, who can then distribute the badges to participants using the password.

2. Review past events

Through https://poap.gallery/, event organizers can review the POAP issued for past events and observe POAP issued by other organizations.

Interesting Blockchain Applications

For event organizers, being able to produce meaningful NFTs at a low cost is advantageous. For participants, it provides a commemorative gift directly linked to blockchain, making it significant. POAP's efficiency and zero-cost offering through xDai have attracted many community applications. While operating on the xDai sidechain of Ethereum, it also offers a path for migration to Ethereum, making it a fun and low-threshold blockchain application for users.
