Moonbirds adopts CC0 to waive their copyright interests. What are the motivations and subsequent impacts?

The Moonbirds NFT project, organized by the well-known NFT community Proof, was announced by founder Kevin Rose on 8/3 to adopt the "Public Domain Dedication" (CC0) for both Moonbirds and Moonbirds Oddities, relinquishing copyright interests for public free use. Why did Moonbirds choose to do this? What impact will it have in the future?

Reasons for Adopting CC0

【Concept】CC0, a type of Creative Commons license CCL, is a kind of license under the Creative Commons authorization, allowing authors to grant others the rights to share, use, and even create derivative works. CC0 is the most open condition, allowing anyone to use it for any derivative or commercial use without authorization.

Kevin Rose said, "We believe that doing so can pay tribute to the Internet and Web3, and open a new chapter for this project."

Kevin Rose explained that protecting what one creates is an instinctive response, and in the past, people have always protected them through patents, trademarks, and copyrights. However, Web3 is an opportunity to reexamine basic principles, an opportunity that doesn't have to be binary, but one that is more inclusive and open. He believes that the neutrality and openness provided by Ethereum, like CC0, allow "anyone" to unleash creativity, combine creation, and introduce it into commercial use.

Kevin Rose believes that this is a commitment from creators that creation itself can become a neutral platform, free from any terms and creation restrictions.

  • What will happen if CC0 is adopted? Everyone can freely use the artistic creations of Moonbirds and Moonbirds Oddities.

Ownership Defined by Blockchain

Unlike Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) clarifying "copyright rules" through legal frameworks, sharing copyright, etc., Moonbirds makes a different choice.

Kevin Rose said, "In this new future, true ownership is determined by the records on the chain, as it should be, rather than records kept by governments or corporations."

This means that the authenticity of Moonbirds comes not from trademark rights established by lawyers but from smart contracts from a single source.

Moonbirds DAO Leading Trademark Usage

Since CC0 does not include trademarks for Moonbirds and Moonbirds Oddities, Kevin Rose stated that Moonbirds DAO will be organized to oversee commercial activities initiated under the names of Moonbirds and Moonbirds Oddities and prevent fraud, hate speech, and violence.

From Open Holders to Everyone's Change?

Kevin Rose mentioned that these changes will be updated on the website soon. However, as of the deadline, the related terms have not been updated.

The current description on the webpage is "You own the IP":

Decline in Moonbirds Price

According to NFTGo data, on 8/5, the number of trades increased significantly by 40, the floor price fell by 12%, and the average price dropped by 18%. In terms of NFT market volatility, this is not considered high. The number of holders remained unchanged.

Expectations of Open Copyrights from the Public

  • Reddit advisor Greg Isenberg stated in March of this year that he believes adopting CC0 is the fastest way to spread memes, and eliminating barriers to sharing memes on the internet will lead to good things.
  • Venture capital firm a16z released an article on 8/3 where NFT collector and Harvard Business School professor expressed that the collaborative environment of CC0 aligns with decentralized communities, contributing to a more open creative environment for the NFT ecosystem.
  • Another NFT project, Worldwide Webb, is also using Moonbirds.
