Japanese electronics giant Casio is expanding its sports-oriented G-Shock watch brand into the virtual universe with its launch of the Virtual G-Shock program, collaborating with Polygon to build Web 3 community loyalty.

Casio Aims to Reach More People Through Web 3 and Cultivate Virtual Fans

According to Decrypt's report, Takahashi Oh, Senior General Manager of Casio's watch division, stated that the launch of this initiative aims to reach more people through Web3 and further expand the G-Shock brand.

Casio aims to introduce its G-Shock watch brand into the virtual and interactable online worlds. The company claims to have sold over 100 million units since the brand's debut in 1983. The NFT initiative aims to help the community co-create these wearable accessories with the company.

Oh stated:

The goal of the Virtual G-Shock project is to increase the influence of the G-Shock brand in the virtual and Web3 world and cultivate a culture of wearing watches in the virtual world. To realize this vision, we hope to cultivate virtual fans through co-creation projects and make more friends to create together the future that Virtual G-Shock pursues.

The initial NFTs to be issued will feature the G-SHOCK drop test prototype pattern, inspired by the spherical experimental prototypes used in the early development of G-SHOCK. Subsequently, the design inspired by the iconic original G-SHOCK DW-5600 will be used.

Note: The vision of G-SHOCK's creator, Kikuo Ibe, was to create a watch that would not break even if dropped. Casio conducted a series of lengthy experiments, adding more shock-absorbing rubber to the watch case until they developed a prototype - one that had a 50% chance of not breaking when dropped from a height of 10 meters. However, this prototype watch was almost as big as a baseball. This is the so-called G-SHOCK drop test prototype.
