No more fear of copy and paste? Twitter launches NFT profile picture verification feature on iOS

Twitter has introduced NFT avatar verification for its Twitter Blue subscription users on iOS, aiming to reduce misuse of the same NFT through wallet linking and verification.

On the 21st, Twitter announced the official launch of NFT avatars for its Twitter Blue subscription users, priced at $2.99 per month.

Users can link their Coinbase Wallet, Rainbow, MetaMask, Trust Wallet, Argent, or Ledger Live wallets to scan and verify their ownership of NFTs on the Ethereum blockchain to set them as avatars. Avatars set using this feature will have a distinctive hexagonal border for identification.

Currently, this service is only available for iOS Twitter Blue users to set up, but the NFT avatars displayed can be seen by all users.

By integrating with APIs from third-party platforms like OpenSea, users can learn about the owners, creators, series descriptions, and most importantly, the authenticity verification of each other's NFT avatars.

As it is still in the early stages of development, it currently only supports static NFTs such as JPEG and PNG files minted on the Ethereum blockchain using ERC-721 and ERC-1155 standards.

According to Twitter, the platform will not maintain a continuous connection with a person's crypto wallet. However, it will store the corresponding wallet address to verify the ownership status of the NFT held at that address.

If an NFT set as an avatar is sold or transferred while still being used as an avatar, clicking on it will not display any ownership-related information.

Unresolved Issue

In theory, this new feature is supposed to effectively reduce the direct copying and pasting of NFT avatar images by others, but according touser feedback, this feature seems to apply to all NFT collections, rather than being limited to verified collections, which means determined individuals can still copy others' avatars and mint NFTs themselves, a situation that cannot be distinguished solely from the hexagonal border on the Twitter page.

On the other hand, although the subscription price for Twitter Blue is $2.99 per month, which is equivalent to only 0.001 ETH at the current market price, there are also many mocking memes under theofficial tweet, indicating that whether the market will pay for this feature still needs further observation.

Musk Expresses Displeasure

Upon seeing the introduction of the Twitter Blue feature, Musk expressed his impatience. He complained that Twitter should not allocate development resources to such things, but rather should focus on organizing the scams in the cryptocurrency community.
