According to the report by WeLiveSecurity, the editorial organization of ESET, on 10/3, a newly discovered malicious software family known as Casbaneiro or Metamorfo is targeting banks and cryptocurrency services in Brazil and Mexico.

Casbaneiro employs an engineering execution method that displays fake pop-up windows, deceiving potential victims to input critical information leading to harm. The malware's functionalities, as highlighted in the report, are typical of Latin American banking trojans, capable of capturing screenshots and sending them to command and control servers, simulating keyboard input, capturing keystrokes, restricting access to websites, as well as downloading and executing other tools.

In addition to banks, one of Casbaneiro's primary targets is cryptocurrency wallets. ESET states that Casbaneiro can monitor clipboard content and replace a victim's copied cryptocurrency wallet with an address belonging to the attacker.

In simple terms, since our cryptocurrency addresses are usually long strings of random characters, and most people rely on the copy-paste function, this virus takes advantage of that by infiltrating everyone's clipboard and replacing the copied random characters with its own address.

As mentioned in the report, ESET realized that the attacker had only one wallet when they posted on Twitter. According to Blockchain.com:

The wallet uses hardcoded binary code and contains about 1.2 BTC, valued at $9,812 at the time of writing, with a total of 71 transactions.

The report also adds that this new type of malware utilizes multiple encryption algorithms, each designed to protect different types of data.
