Gallup Poll: Young Americans Flock to Cryptocurrency Investments, Majority of Those Over 50 Have No Crypto

According to a recent Gallup poll, 6% of American investors own Bitcoin. Since 2018, cryptocurrency has gradually become more popular in the mainstream investment market, with Bitcoin especially gaining favor among young American investors.

The Gallup survey, part of Gallup's "Investor Optimism poll," defines American investors as "adults who have $10,000 or more invested in stocks, bonds, or mutual funds." The survey was conducted from June 22 to June 29 and found that out of 1,037 respondents, 6% owned Bitcoin, a 4% increase compared to 2018. The surge in Bitcoin ownership was primarily driven by young male investors.

Perceptions of Bitcoin Risks

A survey found that investors' concerns about the risks of Bitcoin have decreased from 75% in 2018 to 60% this year, a 15% decrease.

Most respondents believe that Bitcoin carries significant risks, with the only exception being young investors aged between 18-49, of whom 47% consider investing in Bitcoin to be very risky.

Age and Gender of Bitcoin Holders

Regarding Bitcoin ownership, 13% of investors under 50 hold Bitcoin, while only 3% of senior investors do; in terms of gender, 11% of male respondents hold Bitcoin, compared to 3% of females.

Compared to the 2018 survey, 80% of respondents aged 50 and above expressed no interest in buying Bitcoin at that time, which decreased to 70% in 2021. Although there has been a slight improvement, "nocoiners" still dominate among those over 50.

Among all surveyed individuals, 55% of male investors have no interest in purchasing Bitcoin, while the percentage is 61% for female investors.

In contrast, only a minority of young American investors are skeptical about Bitcoin. In 2018, 56% of investors aged 18 to 49 showed no interest in Bitcoin, sharply dropping to 38% in 2021.

Understanding Cryptocurrency?

In the 2018 survey, a minority of investors familiar with cryptocurrencies existed, with 48% of young investors and 38% of male investors understanding cryptocurrency. In 2021, 62% of young investors and 55% of male investors have a certain level of understanding of cryptocurrencies. The data shows a general increase in Americans' awareness of cryptocurrencies over the past three years.

However, the understanding of cryptocurrencies among senior investors and female investors has remained almost unchanged, with both groups having a 24% understanding of cryptocurrencies.
