Polygon will not develop Layer 3, CEO: Focus is on securing Ethereum
The CEO of Polygon Labs, Marc Boiron, tweeted stating that Layer3 will only capture value from Layer2, which is not beneficial for Ethereum's development. He mentioned that Polygon will not develop L3 to strengthen its position as a loyal supporter of Ethereum.

Polygon Will Not Develop Layer3
Marc stated that the purpose of Layer3 is merely to transfer value from Ethereum to the Layer2 that constructs L3, which does not contribute to the future development of Ethereum. This is why Polygon Labs will not develop Layer3.
Although Layer2 is built on top of Ethereum and is also part of the Ethereum ecosystem, if all Layer3s are built on a certain Layer2, Ethereum will essentially not gain any value, posing security risks for Ethereum.
Some community members questioned why Polygon deviated from its usual path and abandoned this new opportunity. Marc explained that Polygon's development has always been aimed at expanding Ethereum, including POS consensus mechanism, Polygon zkEVM, EVM parallel computing, and Polygon Miden, but Layer3 does not align with this goal.
Polygon's Layer2 Product Line Improves
However, even if Polygon does not develop L3, compared to other competitors, Polygon still has the resources to establish a solid position in the modular and Layer2 market.
Polygon's tools for building Layer2 are gradually becoming complete, from the L2 construction framework CDK, integration of cross-chain liquidity protocol Polygon AggLayer to its own data availability layer Avail, forming a powerful Layer2 tool suite ecosystem.
Astar collaborates with Polygon AggLayer to launch Astar zkEVM mainnet online.
It is not surprising that community members find it rare for Polygon to forgo growth opportunities, giving more room for development to other projects as well.
Polygon's Position as Ethereum's Loyal Servant
In the current market environment where rollups are leaving Ethereum, coupled with Vitalik's continuous posts hinting at the hope of developing with rollups, Marc's move this time is unique.
Interpreting Vitalik's Opportunities and Challenges for Rollups
However, whether this move is appropriate remains to be seen, depending on future market developments.
