Kankan Upgrade Deployed on Goerli Testnet with Danksharding EIP-4844 Integration
Parithosh Jayathi, a developer from the Ethereum Foundation, tweeted that the Kankan upgrade, called Dencun, has been deployed on the Goerli testnet with the integration of Danksharding EIP-4844.
However, the upgrade was stalled due to issues such as unsynchronized client nodes, which could potentially lead to chain splits. The developers are investigating the issue and will release a fix.
Client hotfix incoming, seems like they've identified an issue. In the meantime, the network is processing blobs already! We've ingested >1k blobs https://t.co/MddjScv640 pic.twitter.com/NmJUAX9RKw

Ethereum Developers: Identified the Issue and Will Release a Fix
In the past, the Ethereum testnet has experienced client synchronization issues during upgrade testing. Parithosh Jayathi stated that low participation from validators on the testnet, with approximately 10% of validators being offline, can result in the upgrade losing finality. Validator downtime may be due to multiple client node operators not upgrading their software.
Another core developer, Tim Beiko, also explained that low participation was expected.
In his latest tweet, he mentioned that the error in the Goerli hard fork upgrade has been identified and is currently being fixed. The fix will be released in a few hours.
Prysm encountered a bug right at Goerli's hard fork. The bug has been identified, and a fix is currently being merged. A hot patch image will be released within the next few hours. Sorry for the inconvenience, and thank you for your patience!https://t.co/PR9V0lqoCN

Goerli is the first testnet for the Kankan upgrade. It is expected to be deployed on the Sepolia and Holesky testnets on January 31st and February 7th, respectively. The final Ethereum mainnet upgrade is planned for the end of the first quarter.
Previously, several analysts from The Block Research anticipated that upgrades like Dencun and Proto-danksharding/EIP-4844 would increase the adoption of Ethereum Rollup-based Layer 2 solutions. However, a few analysts are skeptical about the short-term impact of the Kankan upgrade on Layer 2, believing that Arbitrum One and Optimism (OP) will remain the mainstream Layer 2 solutions.
