Lido actively improves client diversity, with Geth adoption rate falling below 50% for the first time

The decentralized staking protocol Lido recently released its quarterly report, emphasizing that its node operators have shifted towards running more non-Geth clients. In addition, compared to its dominant position of over 30% two years ago, Lido's staking ratio has slightly decreased to 28.76%.

Lido Significantly Improves Client Diversity

According to the quarterly report released by Lido, the usage of the Go Ethereum Geth, the mainstream client of Ethereum, among Lido node operators has decreased from 67.1% in the previous quarter to 46.6% by the end of the first quarter of 2024.

In 2022, the usage of Geth by Lido node operators once reached as high as 93%, posing potential risks to Ethereum, but has gradually decreased since the third quarter of that year.

Improvements in Exchange Clients

Major exchanges with Ethereum staking services such as Binance and Coinbase have also actively reduced the dominance of Geth over time.

According to Supermajority data, the adoption rate of Geth by Binance has dropped to 8.2%; Coinbase is around 20%.

Slight Decrease in Lido Staking Ratio

A few Ethereum execution clients, Besu and Nethermind, experienced vulnerabilities in January this year. Although the issues were successfully resolved without significant impact, it highlighted the importance of client diversification to avoid situations where validators under node operators using the same client make errors, leading to block generation failures and potential large-scale Ethereum disruptions.

Kasper Rasmussen, Head of Marketing at Lido, told Unchained:

The decrease in Geth usage is significant because it shows that alternative clients are finally mature enough and many participants in the network are able to run non-Geth clients at a fast pace.

Rated data shows that compared to over 30% dominance two years ago, Lido's staking ratio has slightly decreased to 28.76%.
