Ethereum core developers say a merge in August would be reasonable if all goes smoothly.

Ethereum Foundation's core developer Tim Beiko previously mentioned in April that the highly anticipated Ethereum upgrade, The Merge, will not happen in June. The Merge involves combining the current Ethereum execution layer with the Proof of Stake (PoS) consensus layer, transitioning into the era of proof of stake and no longer using proof of work, marking the end of Ethereum miners' work.

On May 20th, during the "Permissionless" forum hosted by media outlets Bankless and Blockworks, Ethereum researcher Justin Drake stated: "We are strongly hoping to achieve the merge before the difficulty bomb in August." Ethereum core developer Preston Van Loon also commented: "If all goes well, merging in August is reasonable."

At the ETH Shanghai Web 3.0 Developer Summit, Vitalik also expressed optimism about the merge happening this summer.

Review: What preparations need to be made before the merger?

Ethereum core developer Tim Beiko provided an update on May 3rd, stating that the following still needs to be completed:

  • Ensure no issues with some mainnet shadow forks
  • Clients pass multiple merger tests
  • Existing public testnets deploy smoothly

He mentioned that if all goes well and runs smoothly for a few weeks, they can move forward with the mainnet merger.

Public Testnet to Complete Merge in June

Ethereum core developer Preston Van Loon announced that the public testnet Ropsten will undergo a merge on June 8th link, a significant step towards the Ethereum mainnet merger.
