Cancun Upgrade Time Confirmed
After a series of tests conducted by developers on the test network, it was finally confirmed during the Ethereum core developer 127th conference call that if there are no issues with the deployment on the Holesky test network, the mainnet upgrade will take place at block height 8626176, approximately on March 13 at 21:55 Taiwan time.
This is the latest major update following the Ethereum Shanghai upgrade in April 2023.
Why the Cancun Upgrade is so Important
The key focus of the Cancun upgrade is to introduce proto danksharding to provide blob storage space, reducing the cost of Layer2 data availability (DA) construction on the Ethereum mainnet.
DA does not store historical data? Data availability does not equal permanent availability.
The Ethereum Foundation hopes that with this update, L2 projects can remain in the Ethereum ecosystem, rather than opting for other data availability layers such as Celestia or EigenDA. However, the choice still lies with the Layer2 development teams, and recently, many new projects have emerged in the market with more distant relationships with foundations, gradually reducing Ethereum's control over DA legitimacy.

Delayed Justice
With the competition in data availability layers intensifying, Ethereum's dominance is gradually diminishing. The long-awaited Cancun upgrade carries the hopes of many, all wishing to make the Ethereum ecosystem stronger and more sustainable.
Although it is delayed by a few months compared to the expected time, it is finally in the final stages, and it is hoped that the upcoming upgrade process will proceed as expected.
