X to Charge New Users

X Daily News tweeted on the 16th that X, formerly Twitter, may further expand its charging policy. The summary is as follows:

  • The charging policy aims to reduce spam and improve user experience.
  • New users must pay $1 before liking, replying, or saving tweets.

  • Previously, users in New Zealand and the Philippines adopted the "not a bot" subscription model, including a $1 annual fee. ZachXBT

Elon Musk confirmed this news in a tweet:

Unfortunately, charging a small registration fee to new users is the only way to resist the rampant army of bots. Current AI and internet troll armies can easily pass the "are you a robot" test.

Musk also mentioned that fake accounts have consumed a significant amount of available namespace, with many good user IDs being hijacked. X has already released over 1 million user IDs and is expected to release tens of millions more in the coming weeks. However, once released, the army of bots will immediately occupy a large number of IDs.

However, the crypto community still believes that the charging policy is futile.

ZachXBT: May Not Be Effective

Crypto sleuth ZachXBT is skeptical of this method, pointing out that there have been over a dozen verified fake accounts from the recent Wormhole airdrop alone. He stated:

It's uncertain whether this will bring the results you expect. Every week, there are hundreds of scam accounts purchasing business verifications, paying thousands of dollars for it.

ZachXBT believes that this may have some effect, and emphasizes that he appreciates X's update speed under Musk's leadership, but charging fees may stifle new user growth and seem unworthy.

Renowned KOL Ansem also believes that Musk underestimates the number of X users being scammed, as scam groups don't mind spending a little money to make big money.
